Founders

The pioneers behind our legacy - honoring tradition, innovation, and family roots.

1861-1908

Gustav Clauss

Gustav Clauss, of Bavarian origin, arrived in Patras in the early 1852s. In 1861, he purchased his first plot of land and founded “Achaia Wines,” the first organized winery in Greece. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his famous sweet wine, Mavrodaphne, had gained international fame, establishing Achaia Wines as a symbol of Greek winemaking.

1919-1930

Vlassis Antonopoulos

Vlasis Antonopoulos, a currant merchant from Patras, became the first Greek owner of the winery in 1918. He added the name of his predecessor to the winery’s title, creating the brand name “Achaia Clauss.” He contributed to its development and to the establishment of Mavrodaphne in international markets. Under his guidance, Achaia Clauss achieved worldwide recognition.

Konstantinos Antonopoulos

Konstantinos Antonopoulos, grandson of Vlasis, began cultivating a vineyard in the Vassilikos region of Achaia in the winter of 1983. With his commitment to quality and innovation, the winery quickly gained a strong presence in the Greek market, showcasing indigenous grape varieties and highlighting the value of traditional Greek viticulture combined with modern expertise.

Nikolaos Karapanos

Nikolaos Karapanos, an oenologist and economist, took over the management of Achaia Clauss in 1996, during a critical period for the company. With his vision and managerial skills, he contributed to the winery’s growth and to maintaining Mavrodaphne’s international reputation. His contribution was pivotal in preserving Achaia Clauss’s winemaking and historical heritage, making it one of the most important wineries in Greece. Since 2017, he has developed his personal project within the walls of the Chateau: Castro Clauss Handcrafted Wines.
